A true-life Catch-22 set in the war-torn countries of Afghanistan and Pakistan, by one of the region's longest-serving correspondents.

Kim Barker is not your typical, impassive foreign correspondent—she is candid, self-deprecating, laugh-out-loud funny. At first an awkward newbie in Afghanistan, she grows into a wisecracking, seasoned reporter with grave concerns about US force's ability to win hearts and minds in the region. In The Taliban Shuffle, Barker offers an insider's account of the 'forgotten war' in Afghanistan and Pakistan, chronicling the years after America's initial routing of the Taliban.

When Barker arrives in Kabul, foreign aid is at a record low, electricity is a pipe dream, and of the few remaining foreign troops, some aren't allowed out after dark. Meanwhile, in the vacuum left by the US and NATO, the Taliban is regrouping.

Swift, funny, and wholly original, The Taliban Shuffle unforgettably captures the absurdities and tragedies of life in a war zone.

US BASES GET THE NOD!

THE expanded American military presence in Australia - to be formally announced next week by the US President, Barack Obama - will result in vastly more US ships, planes and soldiers visiting and being stationed in the nation's north, the government says.

As the government all but confirmed yesterday's Herald report that US Marines and materiel would be shifted to Darwin, the Greens said the move would annoy Australia's neighbours, including China, and make the nation a bigger military target.

A Peace Message

Miko Peled - Son of a General

Writer and peace activist Miko Peled offers an Israeli perspective on how to achieve peace in the Middle East. His father was one of Israel’s most famous generals, Matti Peled, who went from Israeli war hero to peacemaker. His son Miko says in public what others still deny:
“For the good of both peoples, the Separation Wall must come down, the Israeli control over the lives of Palestinians must be defied so that a secular democracy where all Israelis and Palestinians live as equals can be established in our shared homeland.”
His book “The General’s Son” will be released at the end of the year and can be ordered in advance. Order forms available on the night.

Petition against Cluster Bombs bill

Cluster munitions are large weapons that open to release hundreds of small bombs which rain down over a wide area. They are  horrific weapons that kill civilians long after conflict has ended.

Australia has signed the international Treaty banning cluster bombs, but during the week of July 4–7 the Government plans to introduce its Bill in the Senate withunprecedented loopholes. The Bill will effectively allow Australian soldiers to actively and directly assist the US to use cluster bombs. The Bill also lets the US stockpile cluster bombs on Australian soil and does nothing to prevent ongoing investment in manufacture.

The Cluster Munitions Coalition Australia has been lobbying both major parties but your support is critical!

What you can do:

Sign the petition at www.cmcaustralia.org and to pass it on to as many  people as possible.

Burma Campaign — APHEDA Union Aid Abroard

Union Aid Abroad — APHEDA is conducting a campaign that calls on the Australian government to fund cross-border aid programs, rather than the current system of providing aid to Burma in cooperation with the Burmese military regime.

Cross-border aid conducted along the Thai-Burma border allows greater freedom in the delivery of aid compared to the political restrictions placed on aid administered through the Junta. Towns on the Thai-Burma border are home to organisations that travel into eastern Burma in order to provide medical care and support to communities, especially those displaced by the regime. Cross-border aid also means supporting long-term community-based initiatives run by people and organizations based permanently in Burma's Eastern States.

What you can do
Send an e-mail to Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd (see APHEDA campaigns website for suggested text) or contact your local, state or federal representatives.

Meetings, events and actions can also be used to raise awareness and put pressure on the government to change Australia's aid policy to Burma. If you are interested in holding an event, such as a film screening, discussion group or talk, important reports, news articles and links to videos are provided at the APHEDA campaigns website.
